Being an Englishman from not very far away from the Sheffield home of Richard Hawley I have an intense affection for the romanticism of walking through dark evenings under orange streetlights with rain drizzling down the back of my neck. This is the kind of romanticism that you get from this album. Vague echoes of nostalgia that come from the country – Elvis – Orbison tinged feelings of some of the numbers, but with a personal stamp that makes the album well worth listening to. No lack of sentiment here but very little empty sentimentality. Richard Hawley shares with Pulp, who he used to play guitar with, a love for Scott Walker.
